Nestled in the foothills just thirty miles west of Colorado's capital city, Evergreen combines a unique blend of quiet mountain living with proximity to Denver's thriving business opportunities and cultural offerings. First settled during the wild and exuberant gold rush days of Colorado, Evergreen retains much of the atmosphere of its pioneer past. The area's first settler, thirty-nine year old Thomas Bergen from Illinois, arrived with his family in the summer of 1859 and quickly set about building a log home from the abundant stands of trees in the area. This rough building served not only as the family home, but also as an overnight way station (at a dollar a night for bed and board) for prospectors traveling to the nearby gold camps in Clear Creek Canyon. The Bergens, aware that there is more than one way to find gold during a gold rush, also did a prosperous business in buying and swapping trail-weary oxen from prospectors, fattening them on the fine, lush, meadow grass in the area, and then reselling the animals to other prospectors and travelers for a tidy profit.

In 1865 they build another home close by which still stands overlooking the countryside that Thomas Bergen called "...the most beautiful spot my eye ever rested upon." In later years, as more homesteaders were drawn to the area because of its majestic scenery, abundant wildlife, climate, excellent water, plentiful supplies of wood and good open meadows for cattle grazing, the area served as a source of lumber and food for the nearby mining camps and the growing city of Denver. Today these same natural attributes make Evergreen one of the finest residential communities in Colorado.

Located at an altitude of7,040 feet above sea level in Jefferson County, Evergreen lies within the ecological boundaries of an area named by naturalist the Transition Zone, and referred to in Colorado as - The Foothills. It is a descriptively fitting name. To the east, the land flows down to Denver and the Great Plains in a series of sunny valleys and high rolling hills and lowering mountains cut by streams or ancient glaciers. To the west, the land rises in steady tiers to the majestic granite peaks of the Continental Divide and mountains with such names as the Never Summer Range and the Indian Peaks. Immediately west of Evergreen, sits Mount Evans, a spectacular 14,000' peak whose snow-covered shoulders can be seen from many residential homes within Evergreen. It is a view that's hard to surpass for its elemental, rugged beauty. The foothills surrounding Evergreen are known for their mild year-round climate which is due, in part, to the rolling mountain and valley character of the land which serves as a buffer against
